New York’s Alleged Gallery was a playground of artistic display for those who were involved in its creation. The gallery also served as a willing accomplice to some of the most vibrant American artists to come along in decades. “Young Sleek and Full of Hell: Ten Years of New York’s Alleged Gallery” is the physical and visual representation of the spirit that was born from this urban experiment.
From its humble beginnings as a storefront on New York’s Lower East Side to its more glamorous permutations in Soho and Tokyo, the story of the Alleged Galley encapsulates the birth of the most groundbreaking generation of artists since Andy Warhol’s Factory. Curator Aaron Rose took us behind the scenes to witness all the made brilliance that kept the Alleged Gallery on the edge while pushing it to the forefront of American culture.
The book is comprised of artists’ works, interviews, as well as photos from years of gallery openings and general good times. Some of the artists include Shepard Fairey,Thomas Campbell, Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Shelter Serra, Barry McGee, Phil Frost, Clare Crespo, Ivory Serra, and Ryan McGinley and the interviews which are published in the book come from the likes of Terry Richardson (Photographer), Spike Jonze (Filmmaker), Sofia Coppola (Filmmaker), Jason Lee (Actor, Pro Skateboarder), Chloe Sevigny (Actress), Susan Cianciolo (Artist, Fashion Designer), and Lee Ranaldo (Musician: Sonic Youth). "Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell" documents all the glorious trials and tribulations of running an independent gallery in the final hours of the 20th century.
