OUTDOOR is an open air urban art exhibition. While street art is being displayed more frequently in the “closed” atmosphere of galleries and museums, OUTDOORS stems from the desire to get it back into the streets within the framework of a public institution.
OUTDOOR is the first Italian exhibition of street art on currently occupied public housing with an aim to show how street art can enhance urban spaces. The Garbatella neighborhood of Rome will play host to the artists’ works, displayed on the famous housing units (lotti) strung between via Caffaro, via Girolamo Adorno, and via Ignazio Persico. The lotti, despite their deteriorated state, are characteristic examples of an Italian “garden city” and represent the perfect platform for the urban requalification OUTDOOR seeks to achieve. Surely the already high quality of life that residents enjoy can only add an easily tangible artistic inspiration.
The artists selected will install monumental posters (up to 12x26 meters) on the facades of buildings owned by ATER. Four photographers and a filmmaker will follow the artists on the four days preceding the opening to document the installation. A video and photo gallery inside the Teatro Palladium will allow spectators to view the creation of the installation, as well as the story of each individual artist.
OUTDOOR, as opposed to other projects in Italy thus far, has had a strong collaboration from the beginning with public institutions, and contributes to the wider debate of using street art to enhance to urban décor on public buildings. From the monumental scale of the works to the site chosen for installation to the very selection of artists all correlate to the desire to offer will correspond to states to offer street art in a sanctioned area as never seen before. OUTDOOR aims to show a wide audience the stark contrast between street art and "vandalism". OUTDOOR allows Rome to finally compete with other European capitals that have already experimented with this sort of installation, coming up with an installation that will put the Italian capital at the forefront of these cities.
"Treat the walls of your city like the walls of your home”, this invitation / challenge will result in a unique exhibition of original poster art, and will create debate between both street art enthusiasts, as well as local residents.
