Back in the 80s Basquiat took a lot of heat for joining the 'artist elite' and the 'artists elect.' Street bombing was meant to stay on the street. 20 years later no one in this movement is restricted to the street, instead we call it "Urban." That way when we see things that we like we don't have to scheme and contemplate how to take down a wall without having anyone notice it's missing. And then there's the question of, "Where in my East Village studio apartment am I gonna fit this thing?!" They say you can't always get what you want, but now you can. This is where you can find a whole host of galleries that focus their attention on the artists we stalk...I mean, admire from a healthy distance. It was one thing to head to Berlin in '89 for a hunk of wall, it's another to take a piece from the corner of Broome and Mercer. But now thanks to galleries like those listed here you can take home a print or a painting and hang it on the wall with ease.
